About Our Herbal Garden
The enchanting fragrance of the Bharathiar University Herbal Garden, emanates from its location at 11.0390° N, 76.8764° E at an elevation of 490MSL inside the campus.
The inception of the Herbal Garden was on May 18, 2022, and it inaugurated by the esteemed Dr. P. Kaliraj, the Former Honourable Vice Chancellor of the university.
Nestled in the captivating foothills of Maruthamalai, this area sprawls across an 5-acre amplitude.
This herbal garden holds as a nature reserve for over 300 carefully curated medicinal taxa sourced from diverse regions of Western and Eastern Ghats of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
It is one among the important Herbal gardens of Tamil Nadu state Universities as its significance is exemplified with protection of nearly 100 endemic and endangered plants.
The pleasant surprise of the garden makes the visitors a refreshing mind and soul. The entrance is beautified with pair of Betel plants (Piper betle - வெற்றிலை) on either side. A display board of currently available list of nearly 1500 species and its botanical existence is placed in the entrance. The herbaceous species are planted in separate raised beds with roof tiles.
Ex situ conservation of the Rare, Endangered and Threatened (RET) plants of Western and Eastern Ghats is the major thrust area of the garden.
Beyond conservation efforts, it plays a pivotal role in disseminating knowledge and advanced techniques related to herbal remedies, catering to students, scholars, and avid enthusiasts alike.
The listed plants possess a multitude of applications, ranging from culinary uses to the production of medicines, ornamental display, extraction of fragrances and even spiritual rituals.
